Chargers reportedly will sign ex-Packers WR James Jones

Published Nov. 15, 2016 2:30 p.m. ET

James Jones saved the Green Bay Packers’ injury-riddled receiving unit after they picked him up off waivers last season, and now he’ll get a chance to help out the San Diego Chargers in the same way.

Jones reportedly has agreed to a contract with San Diego, one day after it was reported No. 3 wideout Stevie Johnson suffered a torn meniscus that will require surgery.

Jones, 32, joined the Packers just before the start of last season after he was released by the Raiders in the offseason and then cut by the Giants in preseason. Having played his first seven years with quarterback Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay before his one season with the Raiders in 2014, Jones quickly became Rodgers’ top target with Jordy Nelson and others sidelined with injuries.

Despite declining speed that led the Packers not to bring him back this season, he used superior route running, size and hands to lead Green Bay with 890 receiving yards and a career-high 17.8 yards-per-catch average.

Jones won’t have to play such a big role with the Chargers, who have Keenan Allen and Travis Benjamin as starters, but there should be a spot for him now that Johnson is sidelined.
