Browns defend decision not to draft Carson Wentz even after he beats them

The Cleveland Browns got an up-close look Sunday at what they passed on in this year's draft, when they opted to trade the No. 2 pick to the Eagles instead of potentially picking Carson Wentz.

Wentz was very sharp in his NFL debut, throwing for 278 yards and two touchdowns to power the Eagles past the Browns. So, do the Browns regret trading the pick?

"No, we haven't (second-guessed ourselves),'' Browns head coach Hue Jackson said, via the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "That's one thing I can tell you for sure has not happened. He had a good game, a great game if you guys want to term it that, and I respect that. He's a fine young man and they have good coaches and a good organization, and he is going to do well for them, but that was one game.

"He played well. Like I said, we'll look back and see where he is over a period of time, but the Browns have to get better. That's what we have to do. We have to play better, and I think we all understand that."

The Browns acquired five picks in the trade, three in the 2016 draft and one each in 2017 and 2018. But Cleveland could have taken one of the top quarterbacks in this year's draft -- Wentz or Jared Goff -- a position that the franchise has failed to fill for years.

To make matters worse the Browns are already scrambling for help at quarterback after Robert Griffin was placed on injured reserve Monday with a fractured bone in his shoulder.
