Brandon Flowers: I wanted to stay a Charger, play with Verrett again
Brandon Flowers had plenty of suitors this time last year. The recently-cut Kansas City Chief was courted by several cornerback-needy teams.
He chose the Chargers. And this offseason, he chose the Chargers again on a four-year deal that'll keep him in powder blues through 2019.
"I loved every second of my first year from the day I went on my visit to the day I left," Flowers told the team's official website. "I enjoyed literally every single day. It’s a place where I never dreaded once to come in."
The 29-year-old felt at home in America's Finest City. Flowers said the Spanos family welcomed him like he was one of their own. That "football family" increased this offseason with the birth of Brynn Tylar Flowers, who'll be brought up as the daughter of a Chargers player.
Flowers came back for his on-field connections, too. Over the next four years, he'll be relied on to mentor several young promising Chagrers DBs -- including last year's first rounder, Jason Verrett.
“Jason Verrett was a big part of my decision to come back, also,” Flowers said. “(Last year) was Verrett’s rookie year and the way we bonded meant a lot and was great. Having a lot of young guys like him and Jahleel Addae, plus Steve Williams and Chris Davis, I wanted to come back and put those guys under my wing and teach them how to be a pro and approach the game.
Added Flowers: "I have a bond with my teammates where I didn’t want to leave my brothers. They all had an influence on me coming back.”
