Garoppolo is the heir apparent to Brady in New England, but if Brady is able to play another half-decade, Garoppolo would turn 30 before finally getting a shot as a starter.
On Tuesday's episode of "The Herd", Colin Cowherd and Cris Carter reacted to Brady's retirement plans from Garoppolo's perspective, and Carter said he believes Garoppolo will be traded before the new season begins.
The time has come for Garoppolo to receive a shot elsewhere
“So Garoppolo’s now become the Patriots’ 2-iron. He’s in the bag, you never use it. And I’m sitting there thinking to myself — for any other position, Cris, if you were a wide receiver, you’d be like ‘I’ve got to make my catches. I’ve got to go.’
Take me into the mind of a pro athlete. I’m Garoppolo, I’m going now into my fourth year as a backup. Isn’t it time to hit it?”

Garoppolo is stuck, but the Patriots still have time to trade him
“Absolutely, but you don’t control it. He’s stuck, and this is not good news for him. When you have Kraft and you have Brady both saying that ‘you know, forget about three-to-five years, no, no, no… five-to-seven years!’
And Garoppolo can’t afford to stay in New England another three years… because they’re not going to pay him, either. They’re not paying Brady an (exorbitant) amount of money. How much do you think they’re going to pay Garoppolo to be the backup?
That’s why, I believe, they’re going to trade him before the draft, or right after the draft if a team doesn’t get their quarterback."

Tom Brady is likely hoping the Patriots offload Garoppolo
“It should be noted, Tom would like them to trade [Garoppolo] because Tom would love to get another draft pick and a pass rusher. So Brady is probably thinking [trade him].”
If the Patriots believe Tom Brady can stay healthy, Garoppolo is expendable
“Or anything. Tom knows that if they get a draft pick, they’re going to do something with it. And Garoppolo does not help them win another Super Bowl, because they don’t plan on Brady being hurt.”
