New England Patriots backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo proved himself to be a capable starter in Tom Brady's absence over the first quarter of the season — and with Brady confident that he's not close to retirement, New England could choose to turn their second-round draft pick from 2014 into valuable picks in the 2017 Draft.
On Tuesday's episode of The Herd, Colin Cowherd argued that the Patriots could receive a cache of first-round picks if they offload Garoppolo to a team in need of a franchise QB.
Cowherd: Garoppolo is a better option than drafting a QB
"I strongly believe that the New England Patriots could get a ton for Jimmy Garoppolo. I think they could get a couple of first-round picks.
"And you say ‘Well what has he proven?’ What did RGIII and Jared Goff prove before teams gave up multiple picks for them? Jimmy Garoppolo… I know more about him at the NFL level than I did RGIII or Jared Goff.
"And I think there’s going to be teams pursuing Jimmy Garoppolo, and the way [Tom] Brady played in the Super Bowl, New England has all the leverage. They just won the Super Bowl without Gronk and Jamie Collins.
"They don’t have to give you Jimmy Garoppolo, especially if you’re an AFC team and they’d have to get through you. They don’t have to give you anything."

Peter King: The Patriots could turn Garoppolo into a top-10 pick
"The Chicago Bears, the Cleveland Browns, the San Francisco 49ers — all of them are going to be seeking a quarterback this offseason. The New England Patriots, if they so chose, could get a top-10 pick for Jimmy Garoppolo. The way Belichick talked about him, the way he treated him, the way that this organization talks about Jimmy Garoppolo, they believe this is the first guy that they have drafted who they think has a very good chance to keep the line moving once Tom Brady leaves."

Cowherd: The Browns should give the Patriots both of their first-round picks this year
"Every time somebody says this, ‘Well what do you know about Jimmy Garoppolo?’ What, you like Mitch Trubisky because he beat Wake Forest? You like Jared Goff because he he beat, who, Oregon State? What did you know about RGIII?
"[With] Jimmy Garoppolo you have NFL starts. You have all sorts of tape. You have his senior year of college. You have all the compliments. To me, I think New England can ask for — and I’m trying to think, if I was a GM, what would I give up for Jimmy Garoppolo? What would I give up?
"If I was Hue Jackson, I would say ‘Take my first and my 12th pick.’ I have no problem doing that! You’re going to tell me if you coach Cleveland today… you wouldn’t give up that for Jimmy Garoppolo? You’ve got to be kidding me. You drafted four wide receivers last year, you wouldn’t give up a first and a 12th?
"If Garoppolo hits, I’m still getting picks this year."
