    Benson finally breaks through, Martin fails inspection

    finally got a 226 race monkey of his back on Sunday as the Michigan native scored his first career Winston Cup Series win in the Pop Secret 400 at North Carolina Speedway. Benson held off championship contender for more than 20 laps to notch the historic win in his Valvoline Pontiac. After finishing second to two weeks ago at Martinsville, Benson was more determined than ever to finally notch the elusive trip to victory lane. Martin's runnerup finish was tainted however after the Valvoline Ford failed post race inspection for illegal springs. "We have an issue with the No. 6 Ford of ," said Danielle Frye, spokesperson for NASCAR. "The left front spring did not meet the minimum number of coils. As with all issues we have after a race, we will deal with it on Monday."

    Caution 1) Lap 23: Bobby Hamilton spun out and collected on the way down to the apron, bringing out the first yellow flag of the day and the first of several tire stops for the entire field. Stewart goes a lap down) Lap 93: Race leader , second in the Winston Cup standings, puts points leader a lap down, but after green-flag stops shortly after lap 100, Stewart was back on the lead lap. Caution 3) Lap 257: Running eighth, blew a right front tire in turn 1 and smacked the wall, trapping , who had just pitted, three laps down. Johnson had to take his car behind the wall after a loose wheel only got worse as the day went on. Busch lets Martin get by) Lap 283: stepped aside, letting take the lead so Martin could try to lead the most laps and get five extra points in the championship race. Martin clinched leading the most laps by lap 340 and allowed Busch back out front. Caution 4) Lap 290: spun off of turn 2 after a brush with and the 22 car backed into the wall in turn 3.

"The car just felt perfect, it was set up just right for these conditions," Newman said. "We wanted to start up front at this place and think we have a good shot on Sunday. That's only two laps so we have alot more in front of us." The run was Newman's sixth career pole position taking five so far this season to go with his one top spot from 2001.
