Sara McMann pulls off submission over Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Alexis Davis
Sara McMann is an Olympic silver medalist in wrestling, but she showed off her submission skills on Saturday night by tapping out Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Alexis Davis at "The Ultimate Fighter" season 24 Finale.
McMann has now bounced back with two consecutive wins after suffering a pair of defeats to Miesha Tate and Amanda Nunes in 2015.
As the fight got underway, McMann didn't look like she even needed her wrestling acumen after landing several thumping shots on the feet.
McMann's hands looked better than ever during a few exchanges, but she later said that Davis connected with at least one good punch that cracked her so hard that the left side of her face went numb.
That forced her to go for the takedown and potentially cost McMann the round as Davis consistently fished for submissions while landing some nasty elbows from the bottom position.
As round two got underway, McMann got locked up in the clinch with Davis before getting inside on her hip and tossing the Canadian to the mat.
From there it was all power and technique as McMann passed Davis' guard and locked on an arm triangle that looked very secure. Once McMann cleared her legs, she tightened up the hold and Davis had no choice but to tap out.
"I was kind of surprised I caught it," McMann said while noting Davis' impressive grappling background. "It's one of my favorite moves."
McMann has shown tremendous growth over her last couple of fights while also evolving leaps and bounds from her 2014 title fight against Ronda Rousey.
While it's not likely McMann is going to get another crack at the belt following this win, she had no problem asking for the winner of the upcoming UFC 207 main event as Rousey takes on current champ Amanda Nunes.
"I want to fight the winner of Ronda and Amanda," McMann said following her win.
McMann also has history with Nunes after she fell to the Brazilian by submission last year and she's gunning for a rematch — hopefully with the title on the line.
