Following UFC 173 on Saturday night, UFC president Dana White promised a big announcement on Tuesday regarding the upcoming FOX UFC Saturday card in San Jose and he followed through with a bout that will determine the next contender for the title in the welterweight division.
Robbie Lawler, fresh off of his third round destruction of Jake Ellenberger over the weekend, will take on welterweight wrecking machine Matt Brown in a five round main event set for July 26 in San Jose.
White made the announcement via Twitter while also confirming that the winner of Lawler vs. Brown would face Johny Hendricks later this year for the UFC welterweight title.
Yes winner of Lawler vs Brown gets the next shot at the title
Lawler (23-10, 1 NC) lost a close decision to Hendricks in March before making a quick turn around to face Ellenberger on Saturday. Lawler dismantled the top 10 ranked fighter over the course of the first two rounds before unloading huge shots in the third to get the TKO stoppage.
Following the fight, Lawler was expected to take some time off after two straight training camps including a title fight, but with a chance to get another shot at Hendricks he’ll step right back up to take another bout in July.
Meanwhile, Matt Brown (19-11) looks for his eighth win in a row overall while hopefully earning his first chance at a UFC title since joining the promotion in 2008.
Over the course of his last seven fights, Brown has turned into a monster finishing six of his opponents by knockout or TKO including finishes of Mike Pyle and Erick Silva. Now the Ohio native will fight Lawler with a guaranteed shot at the title on the line.
FOX UFC Saturday in San Jose goes down on July 26 with the main card airing live on FOX including the Lawler vs. Brown fight as well as Anthony Johnson taking on Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in a light heavyweight contest.
