Nate Diaz scored the biggest win of his 30-fight career Saturday night when he submitted featherweight champion Conor McGregor in their welterweight bout at UFC 196.
Diaz, who took the fight on 11 days notice, outstruck McGregor 77-61 in significant strikes, according to FightMetric’s unofficial stats, and completed his only takedown attempt in the first round, when he finished the opening five minutes in top position.
The Stockton native picked up the pressure in the second round as both fighters engaged in plenty of exciting exchanges, only to see Diaz wobble the Irishman midway through the round. The fight went to the ground and Diaz capitalized by locking in the rear-naked choke that forced McGregor to tap shortly after.
