Fighter receives touching note from homeless man after giving him UFC 203 ticket

Published Nov. 15, 2016 2:13 p.m. ET

UFC 203 saw fighter Joanne Calderwood get handed a first-round loss via guillotine choke from Jessica Andrade, but the card doesn't tell the whole story of Calderwood's weekend.

A small gesture from the 29-year-old mixed martial artist went a long way towards making her impact felt outside of the Octagon in Cleveland. While walking on the street with a friend prior to fight night, the pair met a homeless man named Robert Butler, who impressed them with his humor and quick wits. In fact, his first impression was so strong that Calderwood told Butler she would leave him a ticket to the sold-out event.

It was a simple, touching act of kindness that was ultimately answered with another simple, touching act of kindness, this time from Butler. After her loss to Andrade, a presumably dejected Calderwood found a note waiting for her as she checked out of her hotel .

The note reads as follows:

Dearest Jovon,

Although you lost the fight you will always be a winner in life!

You are a rare and unique person. Kind, sweet and nonjudgemental. I wish you well in all that you do. I will never forget you!

Yours truly,

Robert Butler
“The Unknown Comic”

That's such an awesome and kind response that it doesn't even matter that Butler got her name wrong, although Calderwood did say she likes the name Jovon! The man could have easily accepted the fighter's tickets, gone to the fight and Calderwood never would have known. Instead, leaving this note made her day.

Clearly, a small show of gratitude and compassion can go a long way into making someone feel better about their situation, and that applies to both Calderwood and Butler in this case.
