Fabricio Werdum vs. Alistair Overeem 3 in the works for UFC 213

Published Mar. 29, 2017 1:28 p.m. ET

Former heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum will look to return to action this July against old rival Alistair Overeem in a bout currently in the works for UFC 213 on July 8.

Sources close to the matchup confirmed the proposed bout to FOX Sports on Wednesday following an initial report from FloCombat. It must be noted, no contracts have been inked and UFC officials have not announced the bout as of yet.

If the fight comes together as expected, it will be the third time Werdum and Overeem have faced off.

The first bout took place in PRIDE Fighting Championships back in 2006 when Werdum submitted Overeem with a second-round kimura. The rematch was in 2011 as Overeem got his revenge with a decision victory over Werdum during the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix.

Now it appears the two heavyweights are headed for a collision course in a third fight to settle the score once and for all.

Werdum last fought at UFC 203 this past September when he won a lopsided decision over Travis Browne while Overeem just earned a knockout over Mark Hunt at UFC 209 in March.

The UFC has still made no official announcement about the card on July 8, but the pay-per-view on Saturday night is expected to cap off a triple header during that week as the promotion is expected to unveil shows on both Thursday and Friday as well.
