Daniel Cormier out of UFC 206 main event against Anthony Johnson

Published Dec. 9, 2016 1:26 p.m. ET

UFC 206 in Toronto just took a major hit.

Light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier has been forced out of his upcoming fight against Anthony "Rumble" Johnson on Dec. 10 due to injury.

Johnson confirmed the news via his Instagram account following an initial report from MMAFighting.com.

UFC officials have yet to make any announcement regarding the change to the card.

There's no word on the extent of Cormier's injury or how long he will be sidelined, but it's a dramatic turn of events as the 205-pound champion looked to defend his title for the first time in 2016.

Cormier was also forced to pull out of a bout against Jon Jones earlier this year due to injury. Jones was then pulled from their scheduled fight at UFC 200 after failing a pre-fight drug test. Cormier ultimately stayed on the card to earn a win over Anderson Silva in a non-title bout.

This latest setback will bring a very tumultuous year to close for the light heavyweight champion while his opponent is now left waiting on word about a new fight for UFC 206.

There appear to be tentative plans to keep Johnson on the card against a new opponent, but that's far from a done deal with only two weeks to go until the show takes place. There's no word on a new main event for UFC 206 at this time.
