New York Islanders Thomas Greiss Deserves Apology

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 6:47 p.m. ET

The New York Islanders committed to making Thomas Greiss the starting goalie when they waived Jaroslav Halak. They made that commitment stronger by signing Greiss to a three-year contract extension.

Heading into this season many wanted Thomas Greiss to be the starting goaltender, I wasn’t part of that club. This wasn’t because I didn’t believe in Greiss’ talent, but because after his heavy workload last season who could be sure how he would respond.

Last season he played 41 games, 16 more than his previous career high, and added another eleven playoff games. I saw how Jaroslav Halak‘s health became an issue after his heavy workload two seasons ago, and didn’t want to see that happen to Greiss.

Halak had a great World Cup of Hockey so I assumed he was a lock to be the starter.

Sure Greiss may have been the biggest reason the Isles beat the Panthers in the playoffs last season, but Halak did set the Islanders record for wins in a regular season by a goalie with 38 in his first year with the team.

But for some reason, Halak wasn’t able to overcome Garth Snow‘s three goalie system and is now playing in Bridgeport.

    The Greiss is Right

Greiss, on the other hand, has been unfazed by the goalie situation in Brooklyn. He’s picked up where he left off last year and has continued to be a steady presence in net. When he plays you’re confident the Islanders will have a chance to win.

Just look at his numbers since he took over the starting role at the end of December. Since December 31, Thomas Greiss ranks second in goalies that have played at least ten games in save percentage with a .936. And ranks fourth in goals against average with 1.99.

As Rick DiPietro would tell you, the Greiss is right!

I have to apologize to Thomas Greiss. I was skeptical at the beginning of the year, but you have proven me wrong. It’s been fun watching you become on of the best goalies the NHL has to offer.
