The NBA will suspend Sacramento Kings guard Darren Collison for the first eight games of the season, according to a report from ESPN's Marc Stein. Collison pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor domestic battery charge following an incident with his wife at their home May 30.
“This is far from who I am as a person and not something I am proud of,” Collison said in a statement to the Sacramento Bee after pleading guilty. “I take full responsibility for my actions. I have apologized to my beautiful wife that I have known and loved since high school. I appreciate and am thankful for the love and understanding from my family, friends and supporters. Now it is time to put this behind us and move forward.”
Collison, 29, has played for five different teams in seven NBA seasons. He averaged 14 points and 4.3 assists in 30 minutes per game for the Kings last year, while knocking down 40.1 percent of his looks from three-point distance.
The suspension is without pay, so it will cost Collison a total of $380,324. He is in the final year of a deal that will pay him $5,229,454 this season.
