Cubs beat Marlins on wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth

Published Nov. 15, 2016 3:08 p.m. ET

Ramos. Ramos, Ramos, Ramos ... it was right there.

The Miami Marlins had a 4-2 lead on the Cubs entering the ninth inning of Wednesday's tilt in Chicago. All Ramos had to do was close this thing out.

But Chicago managed to slowly fill the bases, and after giving up a sac-fly to Dexter Fowler, the Marlins soon found themselves in an uneasy 4-3 lead with the bases fulls. Ben Zobrist walked Ben Zobrist, bringing Javier Baez home. In the next at-bat against Willson Contreras, Ramos whiffed a wild pitch wide left of the plate, allowing Matt Szczur to scoot in for the game-winning run.

It was a heartbreaker for Miami, and another riotous win at Wrigley for a Cubs team that seems to be rediscovering its ungodly blood magic as August opens up.

And that "magic" line might be a cliche for Joe Maddon-coached teams, but it's the only term applicable to a group that won a game earlier in the week thanks to Travis Wood's fielding and Jon Lester's bat. Some sort of witchcraft is definitely afoot in Wrigley.
