Blayne Barber lost the opportunity to earn a 2013 PGA Tour card when he disqualified himself from the first stage of last fall’s Q-School.

FASHION HAZARDS

These golfers weren't smoking anything when they picked out their outfits. But you might think otherwise when you see what they wore.

He won’t be absent from the tour this season, though. On Monday, the former Auburn All-American qualified for the Northern Trust Open and was given an exemption to the Puerto Rico Open.

Barber won the Northern Trust Open’s qualifier Monday by shooting 65 at Industry Hills Golf Club. Barber finished one shot ahead of PGA Tour rookie Robert Streb.

Three-time tour event winner Cameron Beckman and Scott Harrington shot 67s to grab the final spots.

Barber is a Florida native but has history at Riviera. He closed his college career by finishing tied for seventh in the 2012 NCAA Championship at the historic Southern California layout. PGA Tour winner Jason Dufner, an Auburn alumnus, served as a volunteer assistant coach that week.

Barber disqualified himself from PGA Tour Q-School for signing an incorrect scorecard after incorrectly penalizing himself for clipping a loose impediment in a bunker.

Besides that disqualification, his pro career had gotten off to a strong start. He made the cut in his two Web.com Tour starts last year, finishing tied for 33rd at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational and tied for 15th at the Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open. He also won five times on the NGA Tour in a six-event stretch late last year.

Barber’s wife, Morgan, was on the bag for the Monday qualifier and the previous Thursday’s pre-qualifier. He was co-medalist at the pre-qualifying after firing 66 at Morongo Golf Club.

Streb has made the cut in two of four starts this season, highlighted by a tie for 16th at the Humana Challenge. Beckman, who finished 181st on last year’s money list, has made one PGA Tour start this year, missing the cut at last week’s AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Harrington finished 69th on the 2012 Web.com Tour money list in only nine starts after finishing second at the Price Cutter Charity Championship.
