Why Texas' true freshman quarterback already looks like a star

Entering Week 1 of the college football season, there might not be a more intriguing game than Notre Dame at Texas, and within that game there might not be a more intriguing storyline than the quarterback position. While the Irish have two experienced QB's who will split reps, the Longhorns are seemingly set to play a true freshman who has never played a down of major college football.

So yes, the eyes of Texas will be upon Shane Buechele in that opener (assuming he's officially named the starter), but for those who have doubts about the true freshman, it might be time to think again.

That's because on Monday, Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman and Stewart Mandel welcomed noted quarterback coach Jordan Palmer onto the show. Palmer has worked with Buechele extensively throughout the years, and when he was asked about the Texas freshman, had some incredible words to say:

From there, Palmer took things one step further, invoking the name of another Texas legend when discussing who Buechele is, and how good he could be.

Comparing Buechele to McCoy? I'm not sure if Palmer had designs on a political career, but I'm almost certain he could run for mayor of Austin right now if he wanted, and win in a landslide.

From there, the conversation continued, and as host Bruce Feldman mentioned, just about the only thing folks in Texas are truly worried about (besides youth) is Buechele's size. He is listed at just 6'1 and 191 lbs. according to Texas' athletics website, a small size for any quarterback, let alone one who could start in the Big 12.

But Palmer --- who spent parts of seven seasons in the NFL --- doesn't appear to be concerned.

Man, oh man, I can only imagine what Texas fans are thinking listening to all this.

We're guessing there will be extra interest from the folks in Austin.
