Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart has emerged as the frontrunner for the South Carolina head coaching vacancy, a source told FOX Sports.
The 39-year-old Smart was the 2012 AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year and the 2009 Broyles Award winner as college football’s top assistant coach. His D is No. 1 in the nation in yards per play; No. 2 in run defense and No. 3 in the nation in total defense.
In October, Steve Spurrier resigned at South Carolina. The Gamecocks are 3-8 and 1-7 in SEC play.
