Where were you on September 18, 2004? That’s probably not a question you can answer, unless you’re a Tennessee Volunteers football fan. It was on that day that the Vols last beat their hated rival, the Florida Gators.
As crazy as it sounds, it’s been 12 long, miserable years -- and 11 straight losses to the Gators -- that Vols fans have had to endure. It’s not a stretch to say it feels like a lifetime since Tennessee last beat its hated rival, since for many, it was. Kids born the year of the Vols' last victory are currently in middle school.
So yeah, it’s been a long time. But just how long has it been? Here is what the world was like the last time the Vols beat the Gators.

A social networking site called “Facebook” had just started a few months earlier, made exclusively for Harvard students. It eventually went public and 12 years later, it has an estimated 1.71 billion users.

Apple was still three years away from releasing its first iPhone. It’d be another three years (six years from the Vols’ last win) beore it released its first iPad.
The Boston Red Sox were still a month away from winning their first World Series in 86 years. They would come back from a 3-0 deficit in the ALCS to beat the Yankees and sweep the Cardinals in the World Series. The Red Sox have won three World Series since the Vols last beat Florida.

The Lakers were just a few months removed from losing in the NBA Finals with a core that included Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant, Karl Malone and Gary Payton. The “Shaq-Kobe era” officially came to an end a few months before Tennessee last beat Florida, when O’Neal was traded to Miami.

The Olympics were held earlier that summer in Athens, and the U.S. won a disappointing bronze medal in basketball. In swimming, a 19-year-old prodigy named Michael Phelps took home eight medals, including six golds. Hey, I guess some things never change, huh?

Tennessee legend Peyton Manning was still two seasons away from winning his first Super Bowl when his Vols last beat the Gators. He’d capture that title in February 2007 and win a second championship nine years later.

Speaking of the big game, “Nipple Gate” happened at Super Bowl XXVIII, just a few months before the Vols' last victory over Florida.

In politics, George W. Bush was still months away from re-election for his second term in office. If Tennessee doesn’t win Saturday, it will have gone the entire Obama administration and half of the Bush administration without a win over Florida.
In early 2004, Kanye West released his first album, “The College Dropout,” featuring such the hit "Through the Wire.” It would be another three years until his future wife Kim Kardashian "released" her … well, you know.

"Mean Girls," starring Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams, hit theaters just a few months before Tennessee last beat Florida.
"The Notebook" came out a month after that.

So, too, did "Dodgeball." By the way, couldn’t you basically describe Tennessee’s strategy against Florida over the last 12 years as “dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge?” Because I think you could.

Nick Saban was a college coach the last time Tennessee beat Florida. But it was at LSU, not at Alabama. He would leave a few months later to take the Miami Dolphins' head coaching job before returning to the college game in 2007 at Alabama.

Future Tennessee head coach Derek Dooley would follow Saban to Miami. But six years before officially being named the Vols’ head coach, he was LSU’s running backs coach and special teams coordinator when Tennessee last beat the Vols. He’d go 0-3 against Florida during his time in Knoxville.

Lane Kiffin went 0-1 against the Gators as the Vols' head coach at Tennessee, but he was a lowly wide receivers coach at USC the last time the Vols beat the Gators. Kiffin, of course, famously promised to sing "'Rocky Top' all night long” after Tennessee beat the Gators during his first season. Obviously, that never happened.

Steve Spurrier -- a hated former Gators coach and player -- was out of football when Tennessee last beat Florida. He would accept the South Carolina coaching job a few months later, but was always most famous for his time in Gainesville. That stretch included perhaps Spurrier's most famous line ever: “You can’t spell Citrus without U-T.”

Urban Meyer was actually at Utah the last time the Gators lost to Tennessee, in the midst of an undefeated season in Salt Lake City. He came to Gainesville later that winter, and Florida hasn’t lost to Tennessee since.
It’s a streak the Vols will try to break Saturday when they host the Gators at Neyland Stadium.
