With his dropping of the WWE Championship in the Elimination Chamber match, we look at five potential opponents for John Cena at WrestleMania 33.
It has been an interesting two weeks for the franchise player, known as John Cena. Two weeks ago Cena was on top of the world defeating AJ Styles to win his record-tying 16th World Championship.
It seemed like Cena was going to head down the Road to WrestleMania as the WWE Champion. However, as we have seen in WWE plans can change rather quickly. Cena entered the Elimination Chamber looking to take out five of the top stars on Smackdown Live and head to WrestleMania as champ.
However, Cena’s 16th Championship reign came to an abrupt end when Bray Wyatt emerged victorious from the Chamber to claim his first ever WWE Championship. Wyatt now seems to be heading to the main event against Randy Orton.
WrestleMania is about 7 weeks away and a lot will happen from now until the big event. With the WWE Championship no longer in his possession, Cena now does not have a clear path on who he will face at the big show.
With this in mind, we look at 5 potential opponents that John Cena could indeed face at WrestleMania 33.
It has been a crazy few months for the show off as things have not gone his way as of late. After defeating The Miz in October for the Intercontinental Championship at No Mercy. However, Ziggler would drop the title back to him and would lose in his rematch at TLC.
After losing a competitive contest to Baron Corbin, Ziggler finally snapped taking out fan favorite Kalisto with a steel chair. Ziggler would then attack Apollo Crews in the backstage area, turning Ziggler into a heel.
Ziggler would spend the next few weeks battling against both Kalisto and Crews attacking them with chairs after the match. Ziggler would then fight the two in a handicap match with Ziggler yet again coming up short.
Ziggler would then take the two out with a chair yet again, and damaging Crews ankle in the process. With Ziggler still looking to turn around his career, he might now look to take out the biggest name on Smackdown, John Cena.
Both men can hang in the ring and can talk on the microphone, and with Cena being the leader of the locker room he might put matters into his own hands in giving Ziggler’s attitude an adjustment.
With Ziggler needing a huge win to restart his career, what better way to do so than taking out John Cena.
Could there be any other opponent that fans would rather see Cena face than AJ Styles, most likely not? Styles and Cena have been a huge reason why fans have been claiming Smackdown Live to be the stronger brand.
The duo in 2016 had arguably the match of the year at Summerslam, with Styles claiming the win in their epic bout. The Phenomenal One would use the momentum of the win to claim the WWE Championship from Dean Ambrose at Backlash.
After taking a sabbatical for a few months Cena returned to challenge Styles for the WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble. After putting on another instant classic Cena defeated Styles to win his record 16th World Championship.
The two met in the Elimination Chamber, however, both came up a bit short as it was Bray Wyatt who won the match. With the duo no longer in the title picture, for now, the two could meet one more time for bragging rights on the biggest stage.
As we have seen the two have fantastic chemistry with one another and the two can deliver show stealing match at WrestleMania. No fan would be obliged to see these two clash one more time, and with their abilities to steal the show, Styles and Cena could once again give us a five-star classic.
After the events we saw take place at Elimination Chamber Cena facing these two could be a real possibility. At the Elimination Chamber, Cena failed to leave the structure with the WWE Championship as Bray Wyatt won the match.
With this happening it seems for the time being that Randy Orton will face his Wyatt Family Member, Bray for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 33. However, Cena does have a championship rematch clause he could invoke.
Cena could decide to wait and invoke his rematch clause at WrestleMania, which would then turn the main event into a triple threat. We have seen over the years that generally WWE likes to have one of the major titles be contested in a triple threat.
WrestleMania 20, 22, 24, 25, 30 and 31 all had at least one triple threat for a main championship belt, WWE might continue this popular trend this year. Adding Cena to the mix could also set up an interesting dynamic between him and the Wyatt members.
Cena could be used as the guy that the two gang up on and then have the two turn on one another to try and win the match. This could set up the beginning of the end of the Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt storyline.
Orton or Bray could shove the other one out of the ring and pin Cena to win the match. While some fans not like Cena to be the scapegoat to help end this feud, it would none the less put Cena in the main event picture once again at WrestleMania.
From what we saw begin to transpire during the Elimination Chamber it seems like a clash with the Must See WWE Superstar will happen at WrestleMania. It looks too like Cena will have a partner in the match as well, as we could see a mix tag team match.
It has become common knowledge that Cena has been in a real life relationship with Nikki Bella, as seen on Total Divas. Bella who has been in a recent feud with Natalya seems like an upcoming feud with Maryse.
After her match with Natalya at Elimination Chamber, the two brawled in the back and ended up crashing into Maryse hitting her with power, embarrassing and preventing her from walking The Miz to the ring later that night.
Then in the Elimination Chamber match, Cena would end The Miz’s chance to headline WrestleMania, when Cena eliminated him from the Elimination Chamber. Miz might now look for revenge on Cena for costing him a trip to WrestleMania.
With everything that happened that night, it seems like we will see Miz and Maryse try and take down Bella and Cena, with the winner truly becoming the most dominant couple in the WWE. Rumors through Wrestlezone have circulated as well that WrestleMania will be Bella’s, last match in WWE.
With this in mind, WWE might want to send her off victorious in a match with her boyfriend. Why this won’t end up being the most memorable WrestleMania match for Cena, it would help send Nikki Bella off the right way.
