South Carolina postpones national title celebration

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 7:27 p.m. ET

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) South Carolina has postponed its welcome home celebration for the women's basketball team Monday because of tornado warnings and thunderstorms in the area.

The school had pushed back the ceremony to honor Dawn Staley and her national champions to avoid the bad weather. But the school said it would hold off on any gathering for the team's NCAA Tournament victory.

The Gamecocks topped Mississippi State 67-55 on Sunday night to win their first national championship.

Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin said a parade for the women's team would take place Sunday. The university flag was flown on the Statehouse Capitol building. The same honor was given Coastal Carolina last June when it won the College World Series and Clemson when it won its football title in January.
