Voight's career night of 52 points leads Northern Illinois

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 9:18 p.m. ET

NEW YORK (AP) — Northern Illinois senior guard Mikayla Voight had a game to remember against Western Illinois.

She set two school records when she had a career-best 52 points in the 86-61 win on Dec. 8, making 19 of 25 shots — including 11 3-pointers.

The 11 3s set a Northern Illinois record, surpassing the mark of nine set by Alexis Lindstrom in 2014. Her 19 made shots also tied the school mark set by Charmonique Stallworth in 1996. Her 52 points was the third-highest effort in Division I play this season.

"I've really got to credit my teammates because they got me the ball when I was open," said Voigt following her record-breaking performance. "Great passes make it easier to shoot and the bucket just looked really big today. We just took what the Western defense was giving us."

Voight's next game is Monday against Eastern Illinois.

Here are other things that happened in women's college basketball this past week:

EXAM WEEK: Most of the Top 25 teams had a light week because of final exams. No. 1 UConn didn't play and second-ranked Notre Dame just had one game, beating Binghamton 103-53. Third-ranked Baylor went out to California and lost at No. 11 Stanford 68-63 on Saturday.

WOLFPACK ATTACK: Tenth-ranked N.C. State is off to its best start in 21 years. The 1997-98 team started 10-0 and reached the Final Four that season. The Wolfpack (11-0) have a good shot at remaining unbeaten up to ACC play, with games at Chattanooga on Friday and then at home against Davidson on Dec. 30.

UNEXPECTED UNBEATENS: While many of the remaining undefeated teams were expected to be good, like UConn, Louisville and Mississippi State, three of the other unbeaten schools are off to incredible starts. Bradley has won its first eight games for only the second time in school history and the eight-game winning streak is tied for second-longest in school history behind the 2001-02 team that started 9-0. The team can match that mark on Wednesday with a win at Cleveland State. South Alabama also has won its first eight games for the second time in program history. That includes a win over Alabama. The 1984-85 team won its first 12 games before suffering a defeat. The eight wins in a row is tied for the seventh-longest streak in program history. Northeastern is 9-0 to start the season and has tied the school record for longest winning streak set by the 1998-99 NCAA Tournament team. Jess Genco had 31 points, hitting a school-best nine 3-pointers in a win over Providence on Saturday. Genco broke her own mark of 3s in a game.
