The Wisconsin Badgers men’s ice hockey team held off the Michigan State Spartans for a 2-1 win at the Kohl Center in Madison. It’s the Badgers’ second straight win — their first winning streak of the season — after splitting last weekend’s series at Ohio State.
Michigan State (12-13-2, 6-5-2-2 Big Ten) outshot Wisconsin (4-19-4, 2-9-2-2) 33-18, but Badgers goaltender Joel Rumpel proved up to the task and made 32 saves to earn the win.
After a scoreless start stretched into the middle of the second period, redshirt senior defenseman Chase Drake put Wisconsin on the board with a wrister through traffic with an assist by redshirt sophomore forward Morgan Zulinick. Junior defenseman Kevin Schulze added some padding just before the second intermission. Forwards Grant Besse and Cameron Hughes had assists.
Michigan State came out hot in the third period, cutting Wisconsin’s lead in half with a power play goal by Joe Cox.
