Badgers walk-on RB Groshek earning playing time in key spots

Published Oct. 25, 2017 1:38 p.m. ET

Jonathan Taylor isn't the only Wisconsin freshman running back who has been a revelation in 2017. Redshirt freshman Garrett Groshek has been a hidden jewel and the Badgers are starting to reap the benefits.

A walk-on who was a quarterback at Amherst (Wis.) High School, where he was a teammate of fellow another redshirt freshman, starting center Tyler Biadasz, Groshek got some garbage-time carries in Wisconsin's wins over Utah State, Florida Atlantic, BYU and Nebraska (he did not rush the ball against Northwestern).

Groshek did well enough, essentially as the Badgers' fifth running back, gaining 82 yards on 16 carries (5.13 average), scoring a touchdown in the season-opening 59-10 win against Utah State.

Then something interesting happened.

With Wisconsin trying to run out the clock in a 17-9 win over Purdue, Groshek got the ball twice. On a second-and-11 play out of the wildcat formation, the former quarterback gained 18 yards. Three plays later on a first down from the Purdue 30, Groshek gained 14 yards.

Injuries to running backs Taiwan Deal (who is now out for the year), Chris James and Bradrick Shaw helped Groshek move up the depth chart, but the walk-on showed he earned his playing time.

Against Maryland, the one-time fifth-string running back (really, probably sixth if you include Deal) got a carry in the first half as Wisconsin moved the ball down the field for a late touchdown, gaining nine yards.

It was back to garbage time after that -- he ran four more times in the fourth quarter of an easy Badgers victory -- but it won't be a surprise to see Groshek on the field in a key moment for Wisconsin again this season.

Despite having just 24 carries, Groshek is second on the Badgers in rushing yards with 168 -- which is also a very impressive 7.00 average per carry. He's had five rushes of 10 or more yards (or 20.8 percent of his carries; for comparison sake, Taylor is at 24.8 percent, James 17.2 percent, Rachid Ibrahim 9.1 percent and Shaw 8.1 percent). Groshek also has run for nine first downs, or 37.5 percent of the time. Taylor is at 33.6 percent.

A revelation, indeed.

Here’s the complete rundown of the young Badgers from the first seven games of the season:
