Taylor already ensconced as one of best all-time Badgers running backs

In the fourth quarter of Wisconsin’s win over Nebraska this past Saturday, Jonathan Taylor burst through the line, fought his way through two would-be tacklers then outraced everyone to the end zone for an 88-yard touchdown.

The run finished off yet another great game for Taylor, who had 221 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries.

Exclusive Badgers Databases

It was just Taylor’s 19th game at Wisconsin and his 15th rushing for 100+ yards — including all five games this year despite being the focal point of defenses — tying him for 12th-most 100-yard games in Badgers history. He could easily reach the top-five (P.J. Hill, 20) by the end of the season.

Taylor has also eclipsed 200 yards in five games. Only two other Badgers have more 200-yard efforts — Melvin Gordon (7) and Ron Dayne (14).

On Wisconsin’s all-time rushing yards list, Taylor is already 13th … and climbing. If he can gain 1,000 more yards this season, he’d move into seventh on UW’s all-time rushing list and be approximately 1,300 yards behind Montee Ball for second place. Seeing as how the Badgers will have at least eight more games and possibly nine, Taylor could easily eclipse 1,000 yards. If (when) he rushes for 1,184 yards, he’ll be just the sixth Wisconsin back to rush for 4,000 yards, joining Dayne, Ball, Gordon, Anthony Davis and James White.

Reaching Dayne’s record of 7,125 is likely a pipedream in this day and age (Taylor can turn pro after his junior year), on his current pace there’s also little doubt he’d break it.

Taylor is averaging 6.6 yards per carry, which is second in school history only to Gordon’s other-worldly 7.8 average (min. 100 carries).

Taylor also has 21 rushing touchdowns, which is 16th in Wisconsin history. He needs just five more to be all alone in 11th.

And, again, he’s played in just 19 games and can’t leave for the NFL until being in college for three years.

So make sure you have a lot of erasers handy because Taylor is going to keep re-writing his name in the Badgers record book.

Here’s the complete rundown of the young Badgers after the first five games:
