James White and Chris Borland on preseason watch lists

MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin running back James White and linebacker Chris Borland have each been named to preseason watch lists for the 2013 college football season.
White is one of 76 players on the watch list for the Maxwell Award, presented annually to the national player of the year. Borland is one of 75 preseason candidates for the Bednarik Award, given to the nation’s top defensive player. Both lists were announced Monday by the Maxwell Football Club.
White enters his senior season as the nation’s second-leading rusher among active running backs with 2,571 career rushing yards despite making only two starts in his first three seasons at Wisconsin. He is the only active FBS tailback with a career rushing average of better than six yards per carry. He owns a school-record 6.09 yards-per-carry mark.
As a freshman in 2010, White rushed for 1,052 yards and was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. He has nine 100-yard games in his career and begins the 2013 season ranked No. 12 in UW history in career rushing yards.
Borland, who is on the Bednark watch list for the second straight season, was a first-team All-Big Ten selection in each of the past two seasons as an inside linebacker. The senior has 13 forced fumbles in his career and needs just one to match the Big Ten record and all-time FBS mark of 14.
In his career, Borland has amassed 13 sacks and 41.5 tackles for loss — tied for seventh-best in school history — and ranks 19th at Wisconsin with 308 total tackles.
The Maxwell Award, named in honor of Robert “Tiny” Maxwell, is in its 77th year. The Bednarik Award will be presented for the 19th time.
White is one of 28 running backs named to the Maxwell Award watch list, which includes a total of nine Big Ten players. Borland is one of 10 players to represent the Big Ten on the Bednark Award watch list.
Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o won both the Maxwell Award and Bednark Award last season.
