Bucks sign PG Gary Payton II to multi-year contract

The Milwaukee Bucks added some depth at point guard on Sunday by signing Gary Payton II to a multi-year contract. The Bucks had an open roster spot after waiving forward Terrence Jones on Saturday.

The 6-foot-3 Payton has spent the 2016-17 season with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the D-League, averaging 14.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.0 steals over 49 games.

After playing at Oregon State for two years -- following two years at Salt Lake Community College -- Payton wasn't selected in the 2016 NBA Draft. He signed with the Houston Rockets but was waived before the start of the season.

As a senior with the Beavers, Payton averaged 15.9 points, 7.8 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.5 steals per game.

Payton, who will wear uniform number 0, supplies some insurance in case rookie Malcolm Brogdon misses more time. Brogdon sat out Friday's win over Detroit with back tightness and missed two games earlier in March due to his back.

Payton's dad, Hall of Famer Gary Payton, played with the Bucks for 28 games in the 2002-03 season.
