Video Details

Did you know the hounds were originally classified as sporting dogs? Here’s everything you need to know about the group that includes the Basset Hound, Beagle and Greyhound, presented by Purina Pro Plan

JENNY TAFT: The first group to take the ring at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show presented by Purina Pro Plan is the hound group. In 1930 the hound group was created after they were originally classified as sporting dogs due to their common trait of being used for hunting. Notable dogs in the hound group include the Basset Hound, Beagle, bloodhound, Dachshund, Greyhound, and Rhodesian Ridgeback.

The Greyhound is the winningest breed in the hound group with 13 group wins. Six best in show winners have come from the hound group, the last being Miss P, a beagle who took home the crown in 2015. Be sure to tune into the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on FS1 and FOX Sports GO.
