Verlander pitching cereal for veterans

Usually when Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander hears a crunch, it’s the sound of opposing bats splintering like tongue depressors.

Now Verlander can attribute the onomatopoeic word to another endeavor, a philanthropic one at that.

The 2011 American League MVP and Cy Young Award winner is pitching cereal, Limited Edition Justin Verlander Fastball Flakes.

All proceeds from the cereal, available for purchase online at and at Meijer stores, will be donated to the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit and to the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System.

“Meijer is pleased to show its support of our veterans through this exciting partnership with Justin Verlander,” Meijer public relations director Frank Guglielmi told The Detroit News.
