Talk about a trial by fire. On Wednesday, the USC Trojans football team named QB Max Browne, OT Zach Banner, DB/WB Adoree’ Jackson and LB Michael Hutchings as captains just three days before the team travels to Texas to take on defending national champion Alabama.
The Trojans, no slouches themselves, come into the game ranked No. 20 in the preseason polls but will face an uphill battle against a favored Nick Saban team ranked No. 1.
Hutchings and Banner seem obvious choices at captain being seniors in pivotal positions on offense and defense. While Browne, a redshirt junior, won the quarterback job after a summer battle with redshirt freshman Sam Darnold and will lead the Trojan offense.
Jackson is the one wild card in the bunch. Following his breakout sophomore season, the DB/WR out of Serra High School was away from the team during spring practice as he attempted to qualify for the Rio Olympics as a long jumper. But expected to feature some on both sides of the ball this year, Jackson represented the Trojans at Pac-12 Media Day and has lobbied for more responsibility from head coach Clay Helton both on and off the field.
The Trojans kick off against the Tide at 5p on Saturday.
