Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti wants the Dodgers available in every home in the city.
In welcoming remarks at the annual National Cable & Telecommunications Assn. convention being held here, Garcetti said he wants Time Warner Cable and the Dodgers to get deals done with other area distributors for SportsNet LA, the team’s new channel.
While acknowledging his office couldn’t force agreements with Time Warner Cable, which is distributing the Dodger-owned channel, he called on all involved to resolve the issue so that the games are available to all the fans.
So far, Time Warner Cable is the only major Los Angeles pay-TV provider carrying SportsNet LA. DirecTV and other providers are resisting the network, citing the price tag sought by Time Warner Cable.
Time Warner Cable says it is talking with other distributors, little progress has been made and about 70 percent of the Los Angeles market is without Dodgers baseball.
Garcetti and most local politicians have kept quiet about the distribution spat among the Dodgers, Time Warner Cable and other providers even though fans have grown increasingly angry about the situation.
In the rest of his remarks, Garcetti praised the cable industry and even said he loved Time Warner Cable.
However, last month the city sued Time Warner Cable for $10 million in past franchise fees.
