The Cardinals have removed left-handed pitcher Jaime Garcia from their roster for the Division Series and replaced him with rookie right-hander Shelby Miller.
Garcia was diagnosed with a left rotator cuff strain and inflammation after leaving his start in Game 2 Sunday after just two innings. Per MLB rules, Garcia will be ineligible for the NLCS but could return in the World Series should the Cardinals advance that far.
Miller allowed one hit in six innings in his first big league start last Wednesday against the Reds in the final game of the regular season. He becomes the third rookie in the Cardinals bullpen.
Major League Baseball had to approve the roster substitution, which it did earlier today.
