Ducks surprise retiring equipment manager with massive gift

From broken helmets to wobbly skates, equipment manager Doug "Sluggo" Shearer has seen it all... or at least he thought.

Retiring at the end of this season after working in the NHL for 34 years and being on the Ducks' staff for 11, Sluggo finally received some equipment he didn't need to fix. The team surprised their veteran staffer with a brand new boat awaiting him at center ice before practice.

"Any and all hockey players I've ever had, they've been special people, just good, hard-working, down-to-earth people," Shearer said. "These guys are a special group."

The Ducks pushed back Shearer's retirement date for the time being after clinching their sixth-straight playoff berth Wednesday. Their opponent and game schedule, as well as Prime Ticket’s coverage plans, will be released at a later date.
