Josh Emmett talks to the UFC on FOX crew | INTERVIEW | WEIGH-IN | UFC on FOX

Video Details

Emmett joined the UFC on FOX crew at the desk in Orlando after his weigh-in face-off against Jeremy Stephens.

- Now, a big welcome to our headliner, Josh Emmet. And Josh, when you walked up I said, hey man, long time, no see. I saw you December 16. Was there any hesitation in taking a fight so quickly again?

- No, not at all. You know, I went on vacation. I let my body rest mentally, physically. I'm right back in here. You know, I got into this later than most, so my time is now and I want to make a run at that title.

- 90% of your time is spent on the feet in most of your fights. It said that on the stats. Is there a reason you're mo-- you feel like you're most comfortable on your feet, considering wrestling was your first art?

- Yeah, no, I definitely feel comfortable on my feet. You know, we trained everything at Team Alpha Male. I fell in love with boxing, but you know, I can mix things up and I definitely will.

- So, your last fight against Ricardo Lamas, you went out there, you starched him, you smoked him, you knocked him out cold. He didn't really take a shot. Of course, Jeremy Stephens, you could do that to him. But he can do that to you. So what is the strategy going into this one?

- Yeah, so, like Dominic was saying, you know, I have to be a mixed martial artist in this fight. I have to mix things up. Jeremy Stephens-- he's a pioneer of the sport. It's an honor to share the octagon with him. And, man, it's like me fighting myself, you know. I can end the fight any time, he can end the fight any time, and I know that. So we're going to put on a hell of a fight for the fans, and I'm excited for this.

- After the fight with Ricardo Lamas, you came right into the division ranked at number four. That did upset some people that had been there before you, but you think that if you win tomorrow night you are deserving of a title shot already?

- I believe so, and I'm not saying I'm going to jump ahead and fight the champion right away. I know Edgar and Ortega are going to fight. The winner of them is most likely getting the fight against Holloway. I want the winner of that fight.

- It's probably safe to say that pretty much everybody you fought at 45, you might have had the power advantage on your feet. I think you believe that, and you believe you might have the power advantage versus Jeremy, too, and that might be true. But with somebody who shares that advantage with you, like you said, it's a mirror match almost for you, like fighting yourself. How do you deal with somebody who has the same power as yourself? Because you've knocked so many people out, you know what a gift that is. He has that same gift. How do you deal with that yourself?

- Just like I said, mixing things up. You know, I have to use my movement. And I just can't be complacent. I can't stand right in front of him and trade shot for shot.

- Well, you're talking about mixing things up. Obviously your last fight, as we said, knocked out Lamas. Fight before that, Arantes, knocked him down four times inside the first round. So of course, you know, the power in the hands is evident. So, you know, yeah, you want to wrestle, but you know you have the confidence in your hands, you know what I'm saying? So are you going to throw down? are you going to wrestle? I mean--

- The English guy's telling you not to wrestle.

- Just go out and knock him out.

- No, I'll definitely, I'll go out there, and you know, we are--

- What I'm saying is, because you kind of get sucked into that, you know. You're saying the smart money is to wrestle, but of course you believe in your hands, you know you can knock people out. You know what I'm saying?

- No, I know exactly what you're saying but, I have a high fight IQ, and I'm not going to be lured into his game.

- Sure, sure.

- I'm going to fight my fight, and I'm going to come out victorious.

- I only hear your camp talk about a high fight IQ.

- Well, that's what I was going to talk about.

- What does that mean to you guys?

- I was just going to say, folks, if you haven't noticed so far--

- You'll find out tomorrow.

- Been pretty polite, but of course we do have this great rivalry between Team Alpha Male and Alliance MMA, so I have to ask you, Josh. Have they given you any suggestions on facing Jeremy Stephens? What have they told you about him? And what have they told you about how it feels to face an Alliance MMA fighter?

- For me, there is no rival. I don't know anyone personally, on a personal standpoint. So there's no harsh feelings for me.

- Dom can give you some right now, if you want.

- If you want to hate me, you can hate me if you want. I'm not cool with that.

- How's the pressure? How's the nerves? Of course, biggest stage yet. You know, and it seems like this has happened very, very quickly for you. How's fight week been?

- Great, you know, this is what I want. I've wanted this, I've fought on the regional scene for such a long time. I was always the co and main event, so it's no different for me except, obviously it's on a much larger platform.

- Few more eyeballs.

- It's a much larger platform. But you know, I've wanted this. That's why I got into this sport. I'm not content with just stepping foot in the octagon. I want to be a world champion, and I will be a world champion.

- Well, we know the last time you were on Fox, you got that first round knockout. It was pretty spectacular. Another Left Hook Larry here for you, Michael. Josh, we're going to let you go right now and go, get-- you know, do whatever you need to do. Your fight night prep, pre-fight prep. Thank you so much for joining us. Best of luck tomorrow.

- Thanks for having me on, you guys.
