BJ Penn returns from retirement to face Dennis Siver at UFC 199
UFC Hall of Famer BJ Penn will officially return to action at UFC 199 in Los Angeles when he faces Dennis Siver in a featherweight fight on June 4.
UFC president Dana White confirmed the fight to Yahoo Sports on Tuesday.
Penn will fight for the first time since 2014 when he fell by TKO to Frankie Edgar and retired after the bout was over.
The loss came at the end of the hardest streak of Penn’s historic career after he fell to just 0-3-1 through his past four fights before calling it a career.
Penn decided to give MMA one more go after talking to coach Greg Jackson and joining his team in New Mexico where he’s been working alongside several top UFC fighters including Jon Jones, Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone and former lightweight champ Anthony Pettis.
The fight announcement also comes on the heels of an investigation done by the UFC after Penn was accused of allegedly assaulting the girlfriend of a former employee at his website, BJPenn.com.
While scathing allegations were made, no charges were ever brought against Penn and he denied any wrongdoing in the matter immediately.
Now Penn looks to put that chapter of his life behind him as he returns to the UFC and looks for his first win inside the Octagon since 2010 when he defeated fellow Hall of Famer Matt Hughes by first round knockout.
Facing Penn in June will be veteran featherweight Dennis Siver, who looks to stop a two-fight skid after dropping back to back fights to Conor McGregor and Tatsuya Kawajiri.
The German born fighter has gone just 1-3 with one no contest over his past five fights and he’ll look to get back on track by beating Penn in Los Angeles.
UFC 199 goes down from The Forum in Los Angeles with middleweight champion Luke Rockhold defending his belt against Chris Weidman at the top of the card along with Dominick Cruz facing Urijah Faber in a bantamweight title fight in the co-main event.
