Karolina Kowalkiewicz on Joanna Jedrzejczyk: 'I think she's scared'

Published Nov. 15, 2016 2:15 p.m. ET

Karolina Kowalkiewicz has some fighting words for strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk following her latest victory over Rose Namajunas on Saturday at UFC 201.

Kowalkiewicz moved to 3-0 inside the Octagon and stands head and shoulders above the crowd at 115 pounds looking for a title shot.

Jedrzejczyk recently commented that she doesn't believe anyone is on her level, but Kowalkiewicz believes that's fear in the champion's voice rather than confidence that she's truly cleared out the division.

"I think she's scared," Kowalkiewicz said about Jedrzejczyk. "Just like that."

Kowalkiewicz doubled down on her challenge to the champion when the subject of the possible title bout came up again at the UFC 201 post-fight press conference.

It sounds like Kowalkiewicz is gunning for an all-Poland showdown and she'd like to face Jedrzejczyk as early as November at UFC 205 with the gold on the line.

"I want to fight Joanna. I am ready for her. She said that I'm not on her level. I think I'm good enough to fight with her. I want to fight with her. Let's do this. Polish power versus Polish power," Kowalkiewicz said.

"Joanna's a very good fighter. I respect her very much. She's the best in the world. Maybe I'm not the best but I can be the best."

As much as Kowalkiewicz might want to fight Jedrzejczyk as part of the upcoming card taking place at Madison Square Garden in New York, the UFC might have other plans.

UFC president Dana White told FS1 after the card from Atlanta ended that he loved the idea of matching up Kowalkiewicz with Jedrzejczyk, but he'd prefer to put the fight together in their native Poland instead.

“I’d love to do that fight in Poland," White said. "Joanna wanted us to sign her so she could prove to everyone that she’s best in Poland. I could see them fight in New York, but I’d rather see it in Poland.”

Whether it's New York or Poland, it sounds like Kowalkiewicz may get her wish.
