Jim Miller ekes out split decision in second battle with Joe Lauzon

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 3:28 p.m. ET

The first fight between Jim Miller and Joe Lauzon from 2012 was an instant classic, but the two lightweights certainly did their part to make the sequel as good as the original on Saturday night.

Known as two of the grittiest fighters on the roster, Miller and Lauzon knew they'd have to give everything and then just a little bit more to get the win in the rematch.

Miller opted for a striking attack after he came out of the gate and immediately cracked Lauzon with a hard right hand that wobbled the Massachusetts' native for a brief moment.

Miller kept landing hard combinations, but Lauzon eventually saw an opening to take the fight to the ground where he opened up with a barrage of inside punches and elbows.

The second round saw a very similar outcome with Miller using  a technical boxing attack as Lauzon tried to fire back with some hard punches of his own. When the striking game wasn't working, Lauzon opted for a ground war instead and he once again got the better of Miller on the mat.

With a razor-close fight through two rounds, Miller came out firing with stinging combinations in the final five minutes attempting to separate himself from Lauzon just in case the judges had to make a decision.

Miller caught Lauzon with a crushing uppercut during one of the first exchanges of the round, but he couldn't stay on his feet as the former "Ultimate Fighter" competitor planted him on the mat for the third time.

The battle continued as Miller and Lauzon fought for position until the final horn sounded with both fighters holding their hands high declaring victory. Unfortunately only one of them could get the victory and the judges sided with Miller after three rounds.

The final scorecards came back 29-28 and 29-28 for Miller with the third going to Lauzon for 29-28. It was another grueling battle between the two lightweights, but Miller earned his second victory over Lauzon on Saturday night.

"That was a razor-thin fight. I was able to land some good shots on my feet. I squeaked it out," Miller said.  "I never like giving the judges a job at the end of the night, but that's the way it goes."
