Floyd Mayweather sick and tired of comparisons to Conor McGregor
Conor McGregor is getting under Floyd Mayweather's skin and he didn't even say a word to the retired pound-for-pound boxing king.
It all started when Mayweather was asked about watching McGregor's win over the weekend where he knocked out Eddie Alvarez to claim his second UFC title. Mayweather claimed he didn't even know McGregor was fighting before then being asked about the constant comparisons he shares to the outspoken Irishman.
That's when Mayweather fired back at the notion that he and McGregor share all that much in common, especially when comparing his career accomplishments to the current lightweight and featherweight champion in the UFC.
“I didn't know Conor McGregor was undefeated. I didn't know he had a reign in MMA for 20 years and undefeated and was world champion in five different weight classes. That's something I didn't know. So I guess you guys are telling me something new if you say he's the Floyd Mayweather of the MMA,” Mayweather told TMZ.
“If you say he's the Floyd Mayweather of the MMA, I’m trying to find out have you ever made $300 million in one night? Have you ever made $100 million in one night? Have you ever made $70 million in one night. So as far as saying he's the Floyd Mayweather of MMA — it's OK to say it but it's not true.”
For his part, McGregor has never compared himself to Mayweather, but instead taken shots at the retired boxer after rumors surfaced earlier this year that they were in negotiations to fight each other.
The fight never came together, but occasionally McGregor will still get asked about rumored matchup and he has no problem blasting Mayweather at every turn.
“Right now I have Floyd running around the Showtime offices gathering my money. That's what he's doing,” McGregor said back in August.
“He's running around the Showtime offices begging for those executives to come up with $100 million cash for me, to fight me. So as soon as he gets my money, we can fight.”
Mayweather didn't mention McGregor as a potential opponent, but rather someone beneath him on the scale of accomplishments throughout a career.
In the past, Mayweather has been fairly respectful when speaking about fighting McGregor but this time he was a little sick and tired of hearing the comparisons.
“I'm a legend. A living legend. To the sport of boxing I gave years and years of hard work, it was blood, sweat and tears, had a tremendous team, had a tremendous run. I think if Conor McGregor need to go out there and do what he do, but never compare Conor McGregor to me. It's a total disrespect,” Mayweather said.
“I'm a elephant. An elephant don't beef with ants. Elephant is so large he don't even see ants.”
