Daniel Cormier says Jon Jones should be stripped of the interim title

Daniel Cormier doesn't quite understand the logic behind UFC president Dana White potentially matching up Jon Jones with top ranked contender Anthony “Rumble” Johnson rather than face him for the belt later this year.

If that possible fight vexes him, Cormier can't comprehend why Jones is still considered the interim light heavyweight champion after being suspended back in July following a failed drug test for a pair of banned substances found in his system.

Jones still hasn't been punished for the failed drug test stemming from an out of competition sample collected by USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) in June, but Cormier believes the infraction is already enough that he shouldn't be holding onto a title even if it's the interim championship.

Add to that the possibility that Jones could defend the interim title against Johnson if the proposed fight comes together and Cormier's head might just explode.

“Now one thing I completely disagree with, completely — and I don't care who hears it — why in the hell would Jon still be the interim champion?” Cormier said when speaking to Brian Stann on Tuesday. “That makes no sense. That makes absolutely no sense.

Cormier still believes a rematch with Johnson is the best fight the UFC could put together right now, especially considering the disastrous situation that forced Jones out of the championship fight back in July.

Still, if Jones versus Johnson happens, Cormier says it's not a title fight and it's certainly not for the real light heavyweight championship.

It's just a glorified No. 1 contender's match and there's no other way to paint it no matter how many titles Jones has wrapped around his waist.

“I hope to God Dana misspoke, because that makes absolutely no sense. They aren't fighting for some interim title if they fight,” Cormier said. “They can fight in the main event because it's a big fight but it's a fun fight. If they fight, they fight to determine the No. 1 contender it's not some interim championship fight. That makes no sense at all.

“You'd have an interim champion defending the interim championship while the actual champion is actually still there? That makes no sense whatsoever.”

They should not be fighting for an interim championship. That makes no sense at all. I don't even know why he would still be the interim champion. His ass was disqualified. Take that freaking belt off of him. That's stupid.
