Conor McGregor respects CM Punk for fighting but 'he got his ass whooped'

Conor McGregor is never going to be a fan of WWE or their performers, but after CM Punk made his debut at UFC 203, he's gained some respect for at least one former superstar.

McGregor has ripped the athletes from the WWE numerous times over the past few months going as far as saying he would "slap the head off" the entire roster if given a chance.

Following a lopsided loss to Mickey Gall on Saturday night, McGregor gave Punk credit for having the guts to step into the Octagon and at least try his hand at fighting.

It didn't end well for him, but McGregor admires him for at least putting it all on the line and doing something most WWE stars would never dare.

"I tell you what, fair play to him cause he got in there and fought and not a lot of people do," McGregor told TMZ.

Of course, McGregor could let that go without taking one more jab at the WWE roster while still giving Punk a compliment for his effort to make it as a UFC fighter.

"Those WWE guys are straight (expletive) but he isn't," McGregor said. "He got in and fought. So fair play to him, respect."

As far as the rest of the WWE roster, a few wrestlers have spoken out in support of Punk despite his loss although it appears his one-sided defeat became fodder for the organization this past Sunday.

During the "Backlash" event, Dolph Ziggler and "The Miz" opened their match with a carbon copy homage to the Punk vs. Gall fight with a big slam to start things before a near rear-naked choke finish a few seconds later. Whether or not it was a direct slam aimed at Punk is unknown, but Ziggler was one of the wrestlers Ric Flair mentioned as a person who would give McGregor everything he could handle if the two of them ever faced off in the Octagon.
