Bobby Green injured; Benson Henderson now faces Jorge Masvidal in Virginia
Following a close loss last weekend to Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone in Boston, former lightweight champion Benson Henderson proclaimed that he wanted to fight again soon and was wiling to face anyone, any time, anywhere.
It seems the UFC was listening.
An injury has forced Bobby Green out of his scheduled bout against Jorge Masvidal at FOX Sports 1 UFC Fight Night: Mendes vs. Lamas on April 4. Benson Henderson got the call and will step in to replace Green and face Masvidal as the new co-main event in Fairfax, Virginia.
UFC officials confirmed the fight to FOX Sports on Thursday.
Henderson will return in April looking to bounce back from the first two-fight losing streak of his entire career. The former champion was knocked out by Rafael dos Anjos last August before falling to Cerrone in a very close decision this past Sunday.
Now Henderson looks for redemption while also hoping to climb back up the ladder in the 155-pound rankings following a rough run of late that’s seen him go just 2-3 in his last five fights.
Meanwhile, Masvidal is searching for his first signature win in the UFC over a top 10 ranked opponent. The former Strikeforce contender has gone 5-1 since joining the UFC in 2013 including a current three fight win streak as he gets ready to face Henderson in April.
FOX Sports 1 UFC Fight Night: Mendes vs. Lamas goes down from the Patriot Center on the campus of George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia with the main card kicking off at 1 p.m. ET.
