Anderson Silva walks down stairs, so of course that means he’€™ll fight again

What will the amazing Anderson Silva do next?

All of this Anderson Silva navel-gazing is getting to be like parents chronicling the milestones of their first child.

“Look, he’s walking!”

“OMG, he’s using the stairs all by himself!”

“How cute, he’s already lifting weights!”

OK, so maybe not that last one. But you get the point.

The latest Silva social media phenomenon is a video of him walking down a flight of stairs without crutches or any assistance. The former UFC middleweight champion is moving gingerly, but we guess that’s impressive since he broke his leg just six weeks ago.

Or maybe it’s normal. We don’t really know. We’re not doctors.

None of these photos and clips of Silva really mean a damn thing with regards to him coming back to fight.

UFC president Dana White has said he could return before the end of the year. Silva himself has said repeatedly that’s he’s going to come back — and seems more motivated to step into the Octagon than when he was actually healthy.

Maybe he will; maybe he won’t. It’s way too early in the process to judge.

Maybe in six months when he’s going through grueling rehab, he’ll change his mind and decide to take his millions and retire with his family to his Los Angeles home. Maybe in nine months when his leg is still in pain, he’ll realize he’s pushing 40, has already done more than anyone ever has in MMA and doesn’t want to risk further injury.

Could anyone really blame him? There are quite a few people who don’t want him to see him attempt a return. Maybe he shouldn’t.

The choice is his alone and going by what we know about MMA fighters specifically and professional athletes in general, Silva probably will try to come back. No competitor really wants the last memory of them to be crying out in pain and curled up in a heap on the mat. Especially someone who has achieved the excellence of Silva.

It’s way too early to tell what will actually happen. But even if Silva does come back, it isn’t like we’re going to look back at that video of him coming down the stairs in mid-February and say, “Yep, that’s when we all knew.”
