UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier submitted challenger Anthony Johnson in the main event of UFC 210 on Saturday for his second official title defense.
Johnson opened the fight with a completely different game plan than he’d shown in previous fights, as he attempted to grapple the Olympic wrestler for the first five minutes of the fight.
It wasn’t a terrible strategy, as he was up on the scorecards entering the second round, but against the self-proclaimed King of the Grind, it was an odd choice. Cormier made “Rumble” pay in the second round as he fought for and earned a takedown of his own before immediately taking Johnson’s back and ending the fight the same way he did their 2015 matchup -- by rear-naked choke.
Cormier was fantastic after the bout, taking shots at both top contender Jimi Manuwa and former champ Jon Jones, but Johnson stole the show by calling it quits in the Octagon as soon as Bruce Buffer read the results.
Fighters from across the UFC landscape were tuned in to the title bout at UFC 210 and had strong reactions to the bout and Johnson’s abrupt retirement.
