Venus Williams gets knocked out in first round at Australian Open

Venus Williams couldn't back up last year's quarterfinal run in Melbourne.

Venus Williams lasted just one match in Melbourne.

The 35-year-old, coming off her best season since 2010, was routed Tuesday at the Australian Open at the hands’ of Great Britain’s Johanna Konta, 6-4, 6-2.

Williams was the No. 8 seed after a 2015 season that saw her reach the quarterfinals at both the Australian and U.S. Opens, but she looked overmatched on a warm day at the hands of the 24-year-old Konta.

Afterward, Venus made a quick exit from the Rod Laver Arena court:

Konta said when she first saw the draw she just hoped she could last "more than an hour" against the 7-time Grand Slam champion:

Venus and sister Serena are not playing doubles this year in Melbourne, so that’s the last we’ll see of Venus over the two weeks.

Serena is the top seed on the singles side and won her first-round match Monday.
