1st Round. d. Ashe collected only the per diem because he still had amateur status and was ineligible to take home the $14,000 prize money awarded to the men’s singles champion. The women’s champion, Virginia Wade, was paid $6,000 that year.
2nd Round. b. That’s a $200,000 increase from last year’s previous tournament record of $3.5 million, and part of a total player compensation figure reaching $50 million for the first time.
3rd Round. e. Agassi eliminated five seeded men en route to the 1994 title, beating Michael Stich in the final. Agassi was ranked 20th; only 16 players were seeded in those days.
4th Round. a. The Bryan twins have won five of their 16 Grand Slam men’s doubles titles at the U.S. Open, most recently in 2014. Navratilova and Shriver own the women’s U.S. Open doubles record of four in the Open era.
Quarterfinal. c. Oudin is just 25 but has dealt with a series of injuries and health issues in recent years. At age 17 in 2009, she upset four higher-ranked women, including Maria Sharapova, to reach the quarterfinals in New York.
Semifinal. d. Of the four men’s semifinalists in 2016, only Gael Monfils returns to the tournament. The other three – champion Stan Wawrinka, runner-up Novak Djokovic and Kei Nishikori – are done for the season because of injuries.

Men’s Final. a. Tilden was 36 years, 7 months old when he won the 1929 title. The oldest male champion was William Larned, who was 38 in 1911.
