Almagro reaches Copa Claro final
Nicolas Almagro of Spain beat countryman Tommy Robredo 7-5, 6-1
on Saturday to reach the final of the Copa Claro clay-court
It will be Almagro’s second final in as many weeks after winning
the Brazil Open last week – also on clay.
Almagro played two matches on Saturday after rain washed out
play the day before. In the quarterfinal match played earlier in
the day, he defeated Argentina’s Jose Acasuso 7-5, 6-3.
Robredo, who captured the Movistar Open title two weeks ago in
Santiago, won his quarterfinal match over Argentina’s David
Nalbandian 6-4, 6-4.
”It’s a special day to win two tough matches in a row,” said
Almagro, who improved to 3-0 in matches against Robredo. ”Tommy is
a great player on clay and he had a lot of confidence coming in
after winning in Santiago. As for me, I am playing very really well
now, at a high level.”
No. 2 seed Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland was set to play
Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Chela in a late semifinal.
Earlier Saturday, Chela eliminated No. 4 seed Albert Montanes of
Spain 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 and Wawrinka defeated No. 5 seed Juan Monaco of
Argentina 7-5, 6-3 in quarterfinal matches.
