Carlos Moya says he will step down as captain after Spain’s Davis Cup team fell out of the top-tier World Group.

Spain lost to Brazil in Sao Paulo in a playoff this past weekend, dropping the five-time champions to the zone groups for the first time since 1996.

Moya said on his Twitter account, "I will not be the captain for the Davis in 2015, a difficult decision."

Moya had already told Spanish newspaper El Pais of his decision before confirming it in the tweet.

Moya told the paper he began thinking about stepping down during the U.S. Open.

Calls to Spain’s tennis federation went unanswered Thursday afternoon.
