Juan Martin del Potro, winner of the 2009 U.S. Open, has withdrawn from the Australian Open on the eve of the tournament due to concerns that an injured wrist was not fully recovered.

Del Potro, 26, cut short a practice session on Sunday and then told a media conference that he didn’t feel prepared to play in Melbourne.

He said playing could pose a ”danger for my wrist” and hoped to return to tournaments ”very, very soon.”

Del Potro was one of the most significant absentees from the men’s game for much of last season, which he spent recovering from major left wrist surgery after bouncing back from right wrist surgery in 2010.

He is ranked 276th, down from a career-high of No. 4 in 2010.
