Gasol’s 32 power Grizzlies past Celtics
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Marc Gasol matched his career high with 32 points, Zach Randolph added 16 points and 16 rebounds, and the Memphis Grizzlies beat the Boston Celtics 117-100 on Friday night.
Jon Leuer had a season-high 19 points, and Mike Conley finished with 15 points and eight assists for Memphis, which shot 53 percent from the field. Gasol led the way, going 13 for 22.
Kelly Olynyk led Boston with 18 points. Jared Sullinger had 13 points, Jeff Green added 12, while Avery Bradley and Marcus Thornton finished with 11 points each. Evan Turner added 10.
Memphis never trailed in the game and led by 21 in the fourth quarter, the advantage fueled by a 9-0 run.
Memphis recovered from a recent bout of stomach virus that spread through the team on Wednesday while the Grizzlies were in Toronto. As many as seven players have suffered through the symptoms.
Only starter Tony Allen and reserve swingman Quincy Pondexter missed Friday’s game with the effects.
Boston, which trailed by 14 in the first half, made a run to open the third, chipping away at Memphis’ lead. The Grizzlies survived the first push and even took the advantage back to 19. But the Celtics, using Olynyk’s 14 points in the quarter, had a 14-4 run to get it under double digits.
Memphis still took an 82-70 lead into the final period and Boston never got the deficit under nine points again.
Tayshaun Prince converted his only basket of the first half — a 3-pointer — as the horn sounded to give Memphis a 55-41 lead at the break, the Grizzlies’ largest advantage at that point.
Memphis managed to shoot 54.5 percent, controlling the post with Gasol scoring 13 and Randolph 10, while grabbing eight rebounds before the break. The Grizzlies two big men were a combined 10 for 15 from the field in the half.
Celtics: Told before the game that the Grizzlies had a 20-game regular season home winning streak (now 21 straight), Celtics coach Brad Stevens said: "They don’t lose on the road that often, either." … Celtics have lost five straight in the series. … Boston entered the game averaging 106.8 points on the season and 112 points the previous three games. … Green had six rebounds, surpassing 2,500 boards for his career.
Grizzlies: Memphis has not lost a regular season home game since February. … Gasol first recorded his career-high 32 points earlier this season against Minnesota. … Randolph recorded his 16 and 16 through three quarters. He didn’t play in the fourth with the Grizzlies well ahead.
