Coughlin returning to pool in International Swimming League

Published Jun. 11, 2019 10:41 p.m. ET

Natalie Coughlin, a 12-time Olympic medalist, is returning to the pool as a member of the DC Trident, one of the teams in the new International Swimming League.

Although Coughlin never formally retired, she hasn't competed since the 2016 U.S. Olympic trials. In the years since, she's served as a swimming commentator and had her first child last October.

Coughlin will be joined by Katie Ledecky on DC Trident. Rosters for four of the league's eight teams were announced Tuesday.

The Cali Condors roster includes Olympic champion Lilly King and fellow American Kelsi Dahlia, Australians Mitch Larkin and Ariarne Titmus and Canadian standout Kylie Masse.

The Paris-based Energy Standard team includes Chad le Clos of South Africa, Anton Chupkov of Russia, Australian Emily Seebohm, Canadian Penny Oleksiak, Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden and Femke Heemskerk of the Netherlands.

The Rome-based Aqua Centurions are led by six-time Olympic medalist Laszlo Cseh of Hungary and former Olympic champion Federica Pellegrini of Italy.

The pro league for elite swimmers launches in October with meets in seven cities across the U.S. and Europe, ending with a championship in a temporary pool in Las Vegas.
